Luis Montenegro, leader of Portugal's center-right Democratic Alliance, declared victory after contentious parliamentary elections that resulted in the rise of the far right.

With 99 percent of Sunday's votes counted, the Social Democratic party (PSD) comprising two smaller conservative parties, the Democratic Alliance and the Socialist Party,  received 28.67 percent each.

The far-right Chega party came in third place with 18 percent of the votes.

Earlier on Monday, Montenegro reiterated his election promise not to trust Chega or make any deals with populists. However, it is not clear whether he can govern the country without their support.

Pedro Nuno Santos, leader of the socialist party, admitted defeat and congratulated the Democratic Alliance on its victory.
